GNAP Protocol in Rust: The Simple Way to Production Auth
GNAP Protocol Implementation in Rust: Building a high-throughput, zero-allocation authentication gateway from scratch. We animate the exact frameworks so you see how they work.
In this masterclass, we take the RFC 9635 Grant Negotiation and Authorization Protocol from theory to production Rust code. We implement zero-copy Serde deserialization, write custom Axum middleware extractors, accelerate Ed25519 cryptographic signatures with CPU vector extensions (AVX2 / ARM Neon), and benchmark the entire architecture under 10,000 requests per second.
KEY ENGINEERING HIGHLIGHTS: - Zero-Copy JSON Deserialization: Using lifetime-annotated borrowed slices to eliminate heap string churn under heavy load. - Asymmetric Key Binding: Proof-of-possession tokens bound to client Ed25519 public keys, rendering stolen tokens useless. - Axum FromRequestParts Trait: Authoring custom type-safe middleware that extracts and validates RFC 9421 HTTP Message Signatures. - Fast 401 Guard Rails: Rejecting expired timestamps and duplicate nonces in under one microsecond before running expensive Curve25519 scalar multiplications. - Sub-Microsecond Replay Defense: In-memory circular nonce ring buffer tracking thousands of nonces with zero Redis dependencies. - 10K RPS Load Benchmarks: Achieving 0.82 millisecond P99 latency flatlines compared to 12.4 millisecond JWT RS256 spikes and 45.2 millisecond OAuth 2.0 database introspection bottlenecks.
